It's been 21 days and the in game chat is not back on the left side like you said and like almost everyone indicated that they wanted. That's 21 days of not being able to chat while playing chess like I used to- really miss it. Could we get an update please?
Dev on lichess has paused for a brief while. Dev should be back shortly, but you'll have to be patient.

Somebody promised to return chat on the left-side as previous. Three weeks ago. Many say chat below is not comfortable. Does anybody hear that?

Just a suggestion:
At least for team and language chats I think that would be useful if the time was displayed along the message, because when you arrive in less crowded ones, you often don't know if the last messages are from just some seconds ago or many minutes (and so you don't know if you should reply/expect a reply or not)
The problem is the screen space, I guess the better way would be to have a option to turn it on and off.
The bottom chat is going entirely and the in-game chat is being re-written and improved upon. This time there should be something out within a week.
I like just mastered it and it was pretty fun! now i have to master this one again (is there a chance you could make a group chat pleeeeeassssssee)

Do I have to stalk people that follow me on their profile to find they're online now for a game and pester them in PMs to join irc?
Also, irc client is even more unintuitive for most people IMHO, and without irc client you can't watch chess and chat at the same time.
