Romance Novels with Chess Player Protagonist(s)?

I have not read it, however I just wanted to thank you for posting the link :-) I have downloaded it and will look into it.
No problem! I'm also always looking for a good read that's related to chess in any way. (And it's nice when they're free like this Memories of Budapest novel).
I just read a couple chapters from the preview of Memories of Budapest upon seeing this thread. It looks really interesting and it seems clear that the author actually knows something about chess or is being advised by someone who does. It is pretty unusual and refreshing to have the main characters of a novel being serious players.

I will post again upon completing the book.
There is a novel, "The Chess Players", it's set during the American Civil War. As I understand it, Morphy is portrayed in the book, as some sort of spy (I could be mixing up the specifics).
"The Eight" by Katherine Neville is an *excellent* "DaVinci Code"-like thriller in which chess figures heavily. Truly an awesome read, and worth picking up a used copy for cheap... I see used ones for about 4 smackers American.

I know you mentioned 'romance' but this one is worth checking out.. Chess, Charlemagne, Alchemy and Masonic Magical Conspiracies... ooo, spicy!

There is a classic short story or novella by Stefan Zweig, A Chess Story (also sometimes entitled The Royal Game). At least two films have been based on the story. It's a brilliant exploration of the thin line between chess obsession and insanity.
A quick Google search led me to "The Mating Game" by Houska
I read a few years ago a book about a criminal plot in the caliphal Cordoba in a betting environment in fast chess tournaments. I found it quite curious.
It was titled "Endgame in Cordoba" by Mark Dewar. (They are really two English authors fascinated by the time of Al-Andalus and have other books dedicated to it).
