@#10 average rating gives x shift of the rating distributions. If you assume the player pool strength are the same (and there's no reason not to) then it should be pretty straightforward and accurate.

Also the obvious answer is your friend was going easy on you. When a strong player plays against his friend who is a beginner, he's usually not out to crush that person.
