The Complete Checkmate Patterns List (with examples)

Man, this worked. I had no idea how to solve the puzzle before reading the article and after solving every one of the puzzles I took about fifteen seconds and solved the first puzzle, no problem.
Nice list.

However I disagree with the advice to not remember the names of the patterns. The more a chess element can be linked to language element the more likely the element is to be stored and recalled - even if the name tag isn't consciously recalled at the same time. This is a strange feature of how the mind/memory works and applies other learning activities.

Having said this, I am not saying one should memorise the names of mate patterns, rather ensure there is always an association between the mate pattern and name tag whilst learning. The latter will be quicker as a result.
I can't believe I solved the puzzle from the Tactic Ninja course's quiz so quickly, even before reading the article! I am so proud of myself! :) I find it easier to solve puzzles compared to finding the 'Right Move' during a game. When I know there is a puzzle to solve, my brain starts to work differently. For example, I try to look for a mate and go 'backwards,' similar to solving a paper maze by starting from the end. I wish I could do the same during games
Nice work!

I believe that Greco's mate link is going to Morphy's mate.
Thanks for that. Lots of study in perpective for me over a long time scale.

I do have a question about the checkmate patterns diversity. There is something about immediacy and king restriction that seems to help the tactical pattern discovery or learning, and knowing a given position has a tactical range mate as possible head wall banging goal, makes the fog a bit thinner.

So my question is, can we learn all the possible non-mate tactical patterns while practicing only mate tactics.

I realize also that there might be a floating variable.. how deep of a mate tactical pattern are we talking about. maybe..

but i wonder if other tactical patterns might be harder to figure out because they lack the "forcing" aspect of some moves in mating tactics? something like that. question is to anyone.

Please check it carefully, the example which is given for solving i.e. the study one, is same for both, Morphy and Greco Mate....
